Opening Note
When people think about Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), they often focus on the one machine they’re working on. But many serious incidents happen because of something nearby, not the primary equipment itself.
That is where associated machinery comes in.
What Is Associated Machinery?
Associated machinery is any equipment, system, or component other than the primary machine that can introduce hazardous energy into the work area or cause movement, activation, or energy transfer during servicing or maintenance.
This includes machinery that is:
- Mechanically linked
- Electrically connected
- Pneumatically or hydraulically supplied
- Controlled through shared logic, automation, or interlocks
If it can affect the work zone, it counts.
Common Examples You Might Overlook
- Upstream or downstream conveyors feeding the machine
- Robots, gantries, or automated handling systems
- Shared hydraulic or pneumatic power units
- Central electrical panels or MCCs supplying multiple machines
- Material lifts, hoists, or feeders tied into the process
- Equipment capable of back feeding energy
These systems may not be the focus of the job, but they can still create danger.
Why Associated Machinery Matters in LOTO
Associated machinery can remain energized or become active even when the primary machine is shut down. If it’s not identified and controlled, it can lead to:
- Unexpected startup
- Energy back feed
- Gravity driven movement
- Crushing, entanglement, or struck by injuries
If it can move, energize, or affect the area, you must control it.
Best-Practice LOTO Guidance
Lockout/Tagout procedures must include all associated machinery that can create hazardous energy or motion within the scope of the servicing task not just the primary machine.
This is one of the most common gaps we see during audits and one of the most critical to fix.
Associated machinery is any other equipment that can move, start, or send energy into the machine you’re working on, even if you’re not touching it.
How ECPL Can Help
At Energy Control Power Lockout, we help teams close this exact gap.
We work with your safety, engineering, and maintenance teams to:
- Identify associated machinery during LOTO reviews and audits
- Map energy sources and interdependencies across connected equipment
- Design clear, machine specific LOTO placards that include upstream, downstream, and shared systems
- Standardize procedures so associated machinery is never missed regardless of who is performing the work
- Reduce risk and liability by aligning procedures with OSHA expectations and real world work conditions
Most LOTO failures don’t come from what teams don’t care about, they come from what they didn’t realize was connected. We help make those connections visible, documented, and controlled.
